Greener Remodeling

Green is more than just a color. It is an idea, a philosophy. It is the trend that is sweeping the nation, making the world just a little bit more environmentally friendly. And now even the construction world is taking notice.

This article from The National Association of the Remodeling Industry explains how you can make your next remodeling project a greener one.

There are several ways you can reduce the energy output of your home, increasing its efficiency while helping to lower your monthly utility bills. Insatalling high-efficiency windows and doors, a low flow showerhead and dual flush toilet, and a tankless water heater can all cut down on energy costs. And if you are really interested in saving the planet, consider a water harvesting system, which can collect up to 600 gallons of rainwater that can be used to flush toilets, wash cars and water the landscape (not to mention save you money).

While the initial cost output to remodel your home may be steep, your new greener home will pay for itself in time. For example, an additional investment of $10,000 will typically cost a homeowner about $65/month on a standard loan. If the energy savings meets or exceeds $65/month, then it becomes a great return on your investment.

By promoting recycling and the use of durable, low-maintenance, recycled, and rapidly renewable materials, even your building materials can be green. This means that even building your home, itself, will not negatively affect the environment.
